Regular exercise turns your body into the perfect landscape for good health and fitness to flourish in. But if you don’t plant the right seeds in this landscape, nothing can ever take root.
Everyone knows that exercise is good for our health, but many people don’t realize that exercise itself is actually quite damaging to the body. It tears apart your muscles, depletes your body’s precious energy stores and robs you of vital hydration and electrolytes. The benefits of exercise only kick in after the exercise is over, because of how all that exercise damage forces your body to respond – by arming itself better to withstand the next exercise “attack”. You can only reap the rewards of exercise by giving your body exactly what it needs to recover, get back up and toughen up for next time.
That’s where the importance of post-workout nutrition comes in. Giving your body the right foods after your workout make all the difference between progress and plateau. Eating the right foods at the right times helps to replenish your energy stores, water and electrolyte balance, stops muscle breakdown, encourages muscle building and fat burning, improves immune functioning and bone mass, and improves mood and energy levels while decreasing muscle soreness. By consuming particular nutrients in the right balance after your workouts, you improve your body’s composition, performance and overall recovery.
Studies show that you have about a one hour window after you’ve completed your workout to feed your body the recovery foods it’s aching for, which should come in a balanced combination of lean protein with BCAAs along with easily absorbed vegetable- or fruit-based carbohydrates.
This refreshing recovery smoothie contains a wonderful balance of the nutrients you need to replenish your body while pushing it to the next level of fitness, performance and aesthetic. By pre-chopping and freezing all of the ingredients ahead of time, you can quickly whip up this post-workout shake after a hard-core exercise session and forge ahead with the rest of your day, feeling re-energized, re-invigorated and up for any challenge.
