Organize your Spring Cleaning

As April approaches, and the flowers bloom and trees begin to sprout new leaves, so does the dreaded thought of spring cleaning. But not to worry, here are some quick tips to help you organize your spring-cleaning schedule, and get you out of the house as soon possible and enjoying the sunshine.

1) Organize your cleaning room by room, from the inside of your house working outside. Taking on the cleaning in small bits not only helps to avoid leaving unfinished jobs because they’re faster to finish, it can also give you a better sense of accomplishment and progress. It’s easier to feel great about your entire living room being clean, versus all the blinds in the house.

2) Master the art of the multi-task. Once you have a load of laundry in, fill in the time between loads with short and easy jobs like cleaning the bathroom sink.

3) Invest in some new cleaning accessories. A good pair of rubber gloves (that fit) and new cleaning supplies can really help the process seem less tedious. Nothing is worse the realizing mid-clean that you need more detergent or that you’ve got dingy water leaking into your gloves. Also remember to check if your footstools and ladders are safe. It might be time to replace them if you’re doing any heavy-duty work outside.

4) Remember to respect your body while cleaning. This is especially true when lifting boxes or rearranging furniture. Remember to lift with your legs and not your back. Don’t hunch over too much, and maintain good posture when carrying things to minimize any stress on your back. It’s a good idea to stretch a bit before any long bouts of cleaning where you’ll be squatting down or reaching.

5) Declutter. The definition of spring cleaning is basically to get rid of the clutter and reorganize. You’ll also find that once things are out of the way, the cleaning process is much easier, and the energy of your house is much more positive. Try and unclutter as much as you can before starting.

Spring cleaning can be a tough slog, but think about it this way: it’s a great way to minimize the stress of your environment while keeping you active. When you think of it as a productive replacement for the elliptical machine, it’s a bit more palatable than just another chore.
