Meditation
When you’re trying to lose weight, stress is your worst enemy, not only because it messes with your body chemistry, but also because it can take your eye off your goal. Meditation is one way to take some time for yourself, shed the weight of the world, and learn to listen to yourself. The many benefits associated with meditation—more restful sleeps, overall calmness, better concentration and focus—are all part of our quest for stress reduction. Simply put, meditation aims to quiet the mind, guiding us to a deeper state of awareness.
By integrating meditation into your daily life, the changes to your emotional state of being and your overall health are quite beneficial. Meditating has the effect of “uncluttering” our minds, which, in a world of multi-tasking and high-stress situations, sounds pretty wonderful.
It doesn’t take much either. Start off with a few minutes at a time and eventually work your way up to longer sessions. When you’re meditating, keep sitting upright, as lying down might tempt you to fall asleep. The goal is to quiet your mind, reaching calm and serenity no matter what is around you. It helps to choose a time of day where you know you won’t be easily distracted, and also remember to be far away from any technological devices that might intrude on your practice.
If you still find it difficult to focus, try focusing on a candle flame, or another stationary object. You can also repeat a mantra, which can help you concentrate on a single thought. Another technique is focusing on your breath as you inhale and exhale deeply. If you are still having trouble starting, you can successfully practice meditation without sitting down.
Try going for a walk and focusing your thoughts on each single step. Meditation is about rejecting thoughts that might disrupt you from a singular focus. Don’t get discouraged if you constantly have various thoughts going on. Remember that as with anything, it takes practice. The road to inner calm might be a bit bumpy, but the benefits of meditation—focusing on yourself and relieving stress—are well worth the time.
