Feel That Stretch!
Stretching is a key component of any exercise regime. You should stretch before and after your workout. If stretching before, make sure you warm up for five to ten minutes with a cardio exercise (e.g. walking on a treadmill enough to break a sweat). Ten minutes of stretching before a workout keeps your entire body loose and makes you less prone to injury. Stretching after a workout is equally important as it prevents muscle tightness, helps cool down your body, and promotes faster recovery.
But don’t think that stretching is only necessary right before you hit the gym. In fact, stretching is an important activity that should be integrated into your everyday routine. This includes regular stretching in the morning to lengthen and loosen those muscles that have stiffened while sleeping. This routine should also include stretching your back after prolonged car rides or, if your job requires you to be chained to a desk, you should try to give your muscles a good stretch every hour or so. Also, don't forget to stretch those shoulder, arm and wrist muscles after working on a computer for any significant amount of time.
When you’re stretching, be aware of the muscles you’re trying to stretch, and don’t overextend yourself or “bounce.” Breathe slowly through your nose, and focus on the stretch for at least 15 seconds.
And remember, stretching not only works to prevent injury or strain, stretching also helps to increase flexibility, reduce stress, increase relaxation, reduce muscle tension and soreness and increase body awareness.
