With a month full of festive dinners, cocktails and parties on the roster, you may fall prey to some unintentional late-night calorie binging.
But the worst part is when the magic of the evening completely vanishes the morning after, and all that’s left is the unpleasantly heavy, sluggish, lethargic and bloated reminders of your holiday eating spree that somehow feels so much less appetizing in the light of day.
Meh. ‘Tis the season. Life happens. With a handful of helpful morning-after tips and a good detox smoothie, you can uncurl yourself from the fetal position and spring back from your splurge with little to no damage done.
Spend the next day drinking lots and lots and lots of clean water, to rehydrate your body, flush out some of the toxic overload and get the digestive cogs turning again.
Keep your eating light the next day. Eat fresh plant foods that are high fiber, non-starchy and potassium-rich (like spinach, mustard greens, endives, mushrooms, broccoli, citrus fruits, celery, fresh herbs, etc.), to help activate your body’s cleansing cycles and to counteract the bloating effects of high sodium.
Choose super lean protein sources, like beans, edamame, yogurt, tofu, egg whites and fish. Help tame your post-party puffiness by staying away from all sugar, high-sodium, fatty or difficult-to-digest foods the next day, like deli meats, canned foods, cheese, and processed foods.
While the very thought of the gym may turn your already nauseous stomach, getting some cardio in the next day can work like magic for full-reverse damage control. Get yourself outside into the freshly crisp cold air and get in a good brisk walk at a quick pace, no less than 30 minutes. Then come inside and get yourself into a deliciously steamy bath to warm back up and to promote a fantastically detoxifying sweat.
But before you do all that: when you first wake up in the morning, just have a tall glass of warm water with a generous squeeze of fresh lemon. Then, before you eat anything, drink this clean green detox smoothie. While this smoothie is extremely light in calories, its also high in detox-friendly elements like fiber, water and potassium, and it’s very filling. After drinking it, try to hold off eating any solid food until the late morning, giving your body a chance to catch up (from your eating antics the night before), to rest, to re-alkalinize and to re-balance, before you ask it to do any more heavy lifting again…after all, word has it there’s another holiday party happening tonight…
