8 Reasons You should STOP Eating High-Fructose Corn Syrup

“I’m fine, I NEVER eat corn syrup.”

But if you’ve ever eaten any store-bought breakfast cereal, soda, bread, baked goods, candy bars, granola bars, ketchup, cookies, crackers, BBQ sauces, yogurt, jam, pastries, ice cream, salad dressing, marinades, pie crust, hot dogs, crackers, juice cocktails, whip cream, canned soup…baby food…even cough syrup!…than you have eaten high-fructose corn syrup. In fact, like most Americans, you probably consume it without even realizing it, every single day of your life.

So what’s the big deal? If it’s in so many commercial products, it’s got to be safe, right? If the average American single-handedly eats 55 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup every year and it was dangerous to our health, it would be banned – right? Right, says the corn industry and food manufacturers.

WRONG, says leading independent scientists, researchers, peer-reviewed medical journals and top doctors across the globe. While high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is one of the cheapest ways for food manufacturers to sweeten their products and extend food shelf life, here’s why the foremost health experts of the world say that, if you care about your health and your weight, you should avoid HFCS like the plague.

8 Reasons High-Fructose Corn Syrup Makes You Fat & Unhealthy

1.   Liver Damage

HFCS is a highly chemically-processed industrial food product that resembles nothing close to the “natural” food product it sounds like it comes from. Your body digests HFSC differently than regular sugar, which is why it was hailed at first for being the healthier choice. However, as it turns out, it does double the damage.

HFCS contains a high percentage of unbound fructose molecules, which go directly to your liver for digestion. This triggers the liver to start overproducing dangerous fats into the body, like triglycerides and cholesterol. This is why HFCS is a major cause of liver damage and “fatty liver syndrome”, which affects over 70 million people.

2.   Weight Gain & Obesity

HFCS not only consists of fructose – it also contains unbound glucose. When you eat glucose, it gets broken down quickly and dumped into the blood stream, which causes a rapid spike in insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that encourages the body to store fat. At the same time, the rapid break down of all this fructose and glucose in the body sends false hunger signals to the brain, causing your appetite to increase while the body stores it as fat. This is why more and more leading nutritionists and health experts blame HFCS for the nation’s skyrocketing obesity and disease rates.

3.   Diabetes

Global Public Health published research out of Oxford University and the University of Southern California that linked the consumption of HFCS with the rising rate of diabetes. The study showed that people who consumed HFCS had a 20 percent higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes than people who didn’t eat it. This higher incidence of diabetes maintained itself regardless of the total amount of sugar eaten or obesity levels.

4.   Chronic Diseases like Heart Disease, Dementia & Cancer

Eating high amounts of HFCS has been proven to create holes in the intestinal lining of the gut. This allows partially-digested food proteins, fecal matter and harmful by-products of toxic bacteria to enter right into the gut and into the blood stream. The result is chronic inflammation and a badly damaged immune system, which are proven root causes of allergies, diabetes, accelerated aging, obesity, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, cancer, dementia, and several other life-threatening diseases.

5.   Increased Blood Pressure

The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology published a study that showed that even people who ate an otherwise healthy diet increased their risk of developing high blood pressure by 32 percent when they ate HFCS. Inflammation caused by HFCS causes inflammation of the blood vessels, leading to constricted blood flow and high blood pressure.

6.   Learning & Cognitive Impairment

The University of Southern California reported that daily consumption of beverages with HFCS leads to memory loss and learning impairment. These effects were also observed in young children and teenagers.

7.   Toxic Poisoning from High Mercury Content & Other Unidentified Substances

FDA researchers found that HFCS often contains toxic levels of mercury, due to chlor-alkali products used during it’s manufacturing. Moreover, when HFCS was run through a chemical analyzer, strange unidentified compounds were found in it that were neither fructose or glucose. The exact nature of these compounds are unknown, they are untested, and their toxicity and potential effects health effects are unknown.

8.   Reproductive Disorders, Tumors & Cancer

HFCS is made from genetically modified corn crops, which is inexpensive to grow (as it’s subsidized by the U.S. government) and produces higher crop yields. However, across Europe and several other countries, these genetically modified crops have been banned because of studies that have linked them to the development of reproductive disorders, tumor growth and cancer.

….and now the good news. Even though HFCS is used so widely throughout the food industry, the growing awareness of the health dangers it poses has led many more health-conscious food companies to respond by providing more natural, HFCS-free products on grocery shelves. Be sure to always read ingredient lists, and whenever possible, eat whole unprocessed foods and home-made meals made from whole, unprocessed and natural ingredients.
